  • Developed tools to analyze the performance of call center agents (both human and AI), ensuring that conversations met standards for excellent customer service and that the information provided was consistent with a predefined knowledge base.
  • Used human-provided feedback to fine-tune models that predict manual call QA scores.
  • Built ETL tools in Python and Elixir to import and export data between the AWS stack and healthcare formats such as QRDA1.

Senior Software Engineering Manager, PayPal/Braintree

July 2012 – June 2020

Payment processor Braintree was acquired by PayPal in 2013. Joined the Braintree organization shortly afterward.

Led an organization of 20 people split into three teams, responsible for building and maintaining all of the alternative payment method processing (including PayPal and Venmo) within the Braintree system. Key results:

  • Grew transaction volume from the low millions to more than two billion dollars per month.
  • Collaborated across the company to reduce API errors and spurious declines.
  • Grew the team from 4–5 engineers to 20 through external hiring and by attracting talent from within the company.

Personal contributions:

  • Worked with internal solutions engineers and met with end customers to ensure the right solution was implemented.
  • Presented to executive leadership to drive company-wide focus on API quality.
  • Architected novel solutions to problems, resulting in two patent filings.
  • Served as the Braintree site lead at PayPal’s Austin office, leading the effort to bridge the gap between the PayPal enterprise and Braintree startup cultures.

Principal Software Engineer, card.io

July 2011 – July 2012

card.io was the first mobile computer vision solution to allow credit card entry by camera. It was acquired by PayPal in 2012 and later open-sourced.

  • Served as the technical lead for the Android SDK and contributed to the computer vision backend and iOS SDK, using Java, Objective-C, and Python.

  • Led the fraud control effort.

  • Developed a hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) test capability for an airborne ultra-wideband digital RF receiver.
  • Served as lead technical point of contact for two SBIR technology development projects involving digital wideband RF receivers.
  • Developed a maximum-likelihood algorithm for classifying RF signals using MATLAB.
  • Wrote real-time control software and a VxWorks device driver in C++ to control a custom-built RF signal generation HiL environment for testing a rocket flight computer.
